The screwworm paperwork runs both directions. Since spring 2026, the United States requires dogs arriving from Mexico to carry screwworm freedom certification โ a veterinary inspection confirming no NWS infestation, performed in Mexico before you head north. If you took your dog south, plan the return leg before you go.
What the US requires on the way back
- A screwworm inspection/freedom certification for your dog, issued in Mexico by a qualified veterinarian (SENASICA-certified clinical vets can perform it, per USDA APHIS import rules).
- Your dog must also meet the standard CDC/USDA dog-import requirements that apply to arrivals from Mexico.
Finding a vet in Mexico
English-speaking clinics in expat and tourist areas increasingly advertise the certificate โ Playa del Carmen, Mexico City, Los Cabos and the border cities all have options, and mobile services exist that come to your hotel or rental. Book 2-3 days before your return flight so the inspection is fresh at the border.
